About Western Illinois University

Western Illinois University, more commonly known as WIU, is a public university, with the main campus located in Macomb, which is the county seat of McDonough County, situated in the US state of Illinois, southwest of Galesburg, with a population of more than 21 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.

WIU was founded in 1899, under the name of Western Illinois State Normal School, and, as many other universities founded in that period, it was focused on teacher training. The normal school grew, later becoming Western Illinois State Teachers College, which is known today as Western Illinois University, composed of 4 academic colleges: Business & Technology, Arts & Sciences, Fine Arts & Communication and Education & Human Services, in addition to an Honors College the School of Extended Studies, maintaining itself among the best in the State of Illinois.

Western Illinois offers its students 71 undergraduate majors, more than 51 degree programs and 13 pre-professional undergraduate degrees, including 42 graduate and certificate programs. The US News & World Report ranked WIU as a Masters University, which means that it is a university that attracts students, primarily from the surrounding area, and it is committed to graduate education, being also placed on the top half of the US News’ rankings of Masters universities within the Midwest.

The athletic teams from WIU are known as Western Illinois Leathernecks, having the Bulldog as their mascot, who compete in the NCAA Division I Summit League, including in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, in football, WIU being formerly a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, between 1914 and 1970. The Leathernecks are mainly known for their achievements in men’s basketball, football and baseball, in which they’ve experienced most of their recent victories.

Among the most resonant names on the list of notable WIU alumni, there are: Michael Boatman – actor, Lee Calhoun - Olympic gold medal winner, John Mahoney – actor, Mary Matalin - Republican Political Strategist and wife of James Carville, Red Miller - Former head coach of the NFL Denver Broncos and USFL Denver Gold, Donald Talbot - College Basketball Hall Of Fame, Jason Williams - National Football League - Currently Playing Dallas Cowboys, as well as several other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
